Birds make the bird dog.
We didn’t coin the phrase. It has been spoken by many trainers over and over for many years. One thing we do know is the old saying is true…birds truly make a bird dog! We believe in this so much that we started raising them ourselves to ensure we were developing dogs that really understood their purpose in life – using their nose in pursuit of game! Black Hollow Gamebirds originated from a desire to bring out the natural instincts in our hunting dogs. In order to get the most out of your dog, quality gamebirds are a must!
We are a small operation that focuses on producing birds for the Rocky Mountain NAVHDA Chapter, its members and other devoted hunting dog trainers that understand the important role birds play in training scenarios.
We focus our production on resilient, hardy chukar that will have explosive flushing, hard flying traits when used in the field. Our goal is to mimic wild bird flushing habits the best we can in pen raised birds. This quality allows us to hone the steadiness skills of our more advanced dogs.
Our pen raised mallards are crucial to the success of our NAVHDA Utility training. We dedicate plenty of time for the mallards to reach maturity in the pens prior to training season. This ensures our ducks are strong swimmers that are physical tough and bold to help our dogs develop the independence and confidence we are building in the water.
We raise a limited number of ring-necked pheasants each year. We are very selective in this aspect of our production as we only sell full grown roosters. Our goal is to produce a bird that will provide our young dogs the opportunity to learn the tracking skills that necessitate their success while hunting these notoriously running birds.
